Your files never leave your device

No upload, no account, no tracking, no ads, no cookies to follow you. A video or a recording can say a lot about you: your family, your voice, your home. That is why nobody sees them but you.

Everything in your own browser

Trimming, compressing, converting, extracting sound, making GIFs and evening out the volume: it all happens in your browser, on this device, with the video and audio components your browser already has. Your files do not go to a server, ours or anyone else’s. Spoel does not even have a server that could receive them: technically, the site does not allow any outgoing connections.

What Spoel does fetch

Spoel only loads the heavy components when a tool needs them, always from its own address: the component that reads and writes videos, and the components that make MP3 and AAC. That is fetching, never sending.

The preview of your file

To show and play your video or recording, your browser plays it from its own memory. Close the page and that is gone too. Spoel does not keep any files, not even temporarily on your device.

What your browser remembers

Only your preferences: light or dark, your language and the Reading comfort settings. While a result is made, your browser sometimes writes it to its own private storage on this device (so a big video isn’t held in memory twice). That file never leaves your device and is cleared on your next visit.

What you pass on yourself

What Spoel makes is an ordinary file in your downloads. If you pass it on, it goes through your email, your messaging app or your storage, and their rules apply.

Technical logs

Like any web server, our hosting provider keeps short technical logs (such as IP address and time of a page visit) to keep the site running safely. They contain no files. We do not use those logs to track visitors.

Building blocks

Spoel uses Mediabunny (MPL-2.0) to read and write video and sound, the LAME MP3 encoder (LGPL, lame.sourceforge.io), FFmpeg’s AAC encoder (LGPL, ffmpeg.org) for browsers without their own AAC, and gifenc (MIT) for GIFs. They too run only on your device.
